13 This will result in your being witnesses to them. 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

Luke 21:13-15 (NIV)

I am reminded of a verse penned by the Prophet Isaiah:

17 no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,"
declares the LORD. Isaiah 54:17 (NIV)

Brought before kings and governors because of the name of Jesus, God will see to it that His children will be effective witnesses to their audiences by giving them His words and wisdom through the power and prompting of the Holy Spirit. This begins with our having a predetermined firm resolve not to worry beforehand – no matter whom we may find ourselves speaking to - and a diligence to “study to show ourselves approved”. God’s people are to be a prepared people correctly handling and fleshing out God’s Word.

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Tim 2:15 (NIV)

In our day and age, we are so consumed about what others may think of us or of stepping on someone’s toes or of being so “politically correct” that, quite frankly, we literally “love” our spheres into hell by keeping silent when presented with opportunity to lovingly hold out Truth. Like Paul, who desired prayers from the Colossians for open doors to proclaim the gospel of Christ with clarity, our prayer should be of similar nature:

3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Col 4:3-6 (NIV)

In a similar light, Peter gives us the following instructions:

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 1 Peter 3:13-17 (NIV)

God’s promise states He will give us words and wisdom that our enemies cannot oppose or speak against. Again the Prophet Isaiah writes:

6 He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure. Isaiah 33:6 (NIV)

“Fearing God does not mean being terrified of Him (except for those who are being or will be judged). It means to recognize and respect Him and His authority and righteous demands, which in turn results in godly living, worshiping, trusting, serving, and obeying Him. Those who fear Him find Him to be their sure Foundation, their Source of inner security and peace.” Bible Knowledge Commentary

God’s Word fleshed out in our words and in our actions cannot be refuted by human wisdom which, though now perhaps flourishing, God says, will most assuredly vanish:

14 Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish." Isaiah 29:14 (NIV)

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 1 Cor 13:8-10 (NIV)

“It is possible for believers who are completely willing to trust the power of the Lord for their safekeeping and victory to lead a life of readily taking His promises exactly as they are and finding them to be true.” H.C.G. Moule

What I Glean

  • I am to be prepared when the opportunity arises to clearly present God’s truth.
  • Head knowledge alone puffs up therefore my life is to be an example of the words I espouse.
  • I can trust the promises of God.
