Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.** 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV)**
What is sincerely believed is constantly acted upon, Amen? We can talk the talk of faith all day long but walking the talk demonstrates belief in what we say. To be sure, oppositions, difficulties and scandals will confront and it is of the greatest importance that we have a made up mindset of Whose we are and Whom we serve prior to temptation befalling us. Think David and Bathsheba. We can get comfortable and “fat and sassy” so to speak and in a moment of weakness fall flat on our faces. We do not want to go there. Follow it all the way to the end before we take the bait – are we willing to embrace the consequences which are certain? We get to choose to sin but God chooses the consequences. While sins are forgiven, there are always consequences and we do not want to go there. Also, We do not live as unto ourselves either. What we do effects many and sin is a bad reflection on Whom we serve. Further, we are to live our lives for an audience of One, and not simply for our own pleasures.
We have been bought with a high price and we are to honor God with our bodies in all we say and do and think. This is taking hold of the life that is truly life and is greatly blessed with a peace that passes understanding. We can talk ourselves into anything and rationalize ourselves into ruin. It does us well to remember that sin has never done anything for us yet Jesus died for us. Again, it is uber easy to spout out Truth but we will demonstrate that we believe Truth by what we do. Our actions will speak louder than our words and they are always the telltale sign. Like the saints of the past that the “world was not worthy of,” the writer of Hebrews tells us. They actually lived what they truly believed to be true. The axiom is quite true, “our actions will speak louder than our words”. What we need is firm resolutions, made up mindsets prior to temptations coming our way and seek to avoid unnecessary ones. Seriously, everyone knows if they are trying to lose weight they don’t linger at a donut shop, right? Or if they are trying not to spend money they seek not to place themselves in places that would cause them to fall. In the same manner, we are to seek a strong resolution against all oppositions. We do well to know ourselves and seek to avoid unnecessary temptations.
Knowing God’s Word helps to keep us from falling and the Holy Spirit strengthens us with all power enabling us not to stray from God’s path. Also, pray for a firm resolution to carry us through much opposition and temptation.
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.** 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (NIV)**
