The Lesson Learned

God delights in answering our prayers. And He answers all prayers – some yes, some no, some wait. The latter being the hardest, Amen? Think King David and how many years it was from his anointing to be king until he was actually made king. And those years were far from easy either. It takes many years to train a saint for service. God sees the end results through our trials but we often do not. Yet, believe me, He is at work through everything He allows in the lives of His heirs of mercy. Nothing is chance or happenstance with Him. And waiting on the Lord is always worth the wait. Always.

Our primary job is to be faithful in prayer - He hears every.last.one.of.them – even the moaning and groanings of our hearts when our words elude us. Our prayers and pleas never go unheard and open the heart of God to move His mighty Hand on our behalf. Our part is to discipline our emotions and do the next right thing. Further, He loves to hear His children pray back His Word to Him. This demonstrates their confidence in Scripture and the belief that it is the very Word of God and for our best. Our prayers are made powerful when we do so as God never goes against His revealed will. And the safest place to be is standing firm in God’s will, mature and fully assured. There is also trust, vigor, strength and affection found in true prayer. Prayer changes us. And our souls are to desire communion with the Creator through prayer as a deer pants for water, Scripture tells us.

God draws near to the humble and His ears are attentive to their cries - those who call out to Him day and night from their hearts. True prayer feels and groans and sighs from the heart. We lay our hearts open before the Lord – as He knows them anyway – and we place our requests at His feet. He is always willing and ready to hear – no matter what time of day - and He never repeats what His children pray. We are safe with Him. Indeed, our lives are to be as a walking prayer life – He is always only a whisper away.

Many of us are simply content in spouting prayers that are more mumbling or ritualistic than heartfelt. And we miss out on so much blessing. How would you feel if your child came to you in that way – formal, distant, distracted - simply spouting out what was memorized as a young child? Our God is a God who likes us to sit on His lap - resting our heads between His all-powerful shoulders and telling Him all that is on our hearts – He knows it anyway. Yet, by telling Him we are seeking to place our trust in Him by placing our requests in His all powerful hands rather than keeping our hearts burdened by them. As Moses penned in Deuteronomy 33:12 (NIV): “Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders.” And assuredly, He loves all who approach Him in sincerity and Truth.

If we find little fruit in our petitions to our Father, we are not to lay aside our crying out to Him rather we are to continue steadfastly in it. He will either change our circumstances or change us in them – the latter often being the greater. Truly when our heart desires in prayer seem to lie dormant or dead, we are to allow our faith and hope to discover what will become of them – pondering anew what the Almighty can do as we persevere in supplication with thanksgiving.

Heart Savor

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
