“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalms 46:10 (NIV)
Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek. Psalms 27:7-8 (NIV)
Isn’t is hard to be still? We might be able to force our busy bodies into a chair but our minds are going ninety miles an hour! Everything starts swimming through them from grocery lists to Target runs to every errand we can imagine! It is so annoyingly hard to quiet one’s mind before the Lord. Not to give the adversary too much credit here – because flesh seems to do the job beautifully - but Satan despises for us to be quiet before our sweet Jesus and listen to His still small voice. That, in and of itself, tells us it is important for us to be doing it. God loves to teach us in the quietness of our hearts – pouring His love into us so that we can in turn can exalt Him throughout the earth. We cannot pour out what we do not have, Amen?
God calls for His people to trust Him and to know that He is God. He is desirous for us to have daily times of reflection in His Word and to listen for His leading. This builds our trust in His saving power and enables us to anticipate the peace He longs to bestow upon us not to mention His overwhelming comfort and strength.
If we stop to reflect for a nano second that the God of all creation – the God Who is able to do all things - desires to be with and commune with us it should get our greatest attention. It is sad to think that a tweet or a call or an email ding would be more important than being with Him. Yet, all too often, we see that play out in our lives over and over and over again. We can get so distracted, can we not?
God desires for us to quiet ourselves before Him and to pray before we enter into His mighty Presence and into His Word. Asking Him to open our eyes to all He would have for us to see - in our reading and in our prayers and in the quietness of our hearts. It is amazing to me that in Scripture people fell as dead men in the presence of mere angelic beings, how much more so when we enter into the presence of the One that makes known the end from the beginning. How foolish can we be we? Quiet yourself before Him for your own good.
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him. Psalms 37:7 (NIV)
