Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Romans 12:9-11 (NIV)
As the wings are to the bird likewise fervent zeal is to the soul of the faithful follower of our Lord Jesus. And it is a winsome and loving zeal which is guided by God’s Word rather than the mere simple opinions of man or the wrong inclinations and leanings of our hearts. Scripture tells us to be zealous for God and His Truth and not our own lame and limping leanings and biases. Also, when we are zealous for God we are strengthened and enabled in all our obstacles to stand firm in God’s will mature and fully assured. God confers honorable blessings upon the zealous of heart for His Word and its Truth, and Christ calls and urges us to it. To be sure, Satan hates it. He always seeks to quench it. Indeed, the adversary of our souls loves the lukewarm as they rarely accomplish anything in furthering God’s Kingdom and even Jesus wants to spit them out of His mouth (quite literally, throw them up). Furthermore, where true zeal is present we are not to be surprised by opposition from the enemy – rather we should expect it – as the adversary hates our zeal for the Lord because it is wooing, compelling and contagious.
Christian zeal embraces the praiseworthy – seeking to keep pure through obedience to God’s Word by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit - just as Christ was pure and lovely, winsome and wooing. Remember as well, a hot iron hisses when cold water is dripped on it – we are to both disdain evil and cling to good. There are many distractions in our world – things that may even be good, but perhaps not the best. We must learn to discern God’s will for our lives, His good and pleasing and perfect will. He promises to show us as we lean into His Word and follow Him. He will not let us miss His best for our lives if we are diligently seeking it. The promise in Jeremiah 29:13-14 is: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.” Being enmeshed in sin is always captivity.
We must be zealous if we desire to see soul’s converted for Jesus and seek to place crowns upon the head of our Savior. Zeal leads this charge as it does great exploits for the Lord. A deep sense of gratitude for all God has done for us will nourish and strengthen our zeal. Never be lacking in it!
Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:19-20 (NIV)
