Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV)
None of us knows what the day will hold. But what we can know, is the One Who holds the day, Amen? Our confidence comes from Him. As we cast our cares upon Him, He will sustain us with His righteous right Hand, granting us a peace which passes human understanding. He will never let the righteous fall. We must watch against our distracting cares and chronic complaining.
Remember our Lord’s own Word given us regarding this in Matthew 6:25-27 (NIV): “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” The answer to that would be a resounding “No one.”
In our verses for today, Paul exhorts us to prayer rather than to anxiety. This involves our trusting Jesus, believing He has our best interest at heart - even in the most difficult of circumstances. We can trust Him with our lives and with the lives of all we hold near and dear. God’s desire is for His saints to seek His face in prayer as King David did when he prayed in Psalms 27:8 (NIV): “My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, LORD, I will seek.” And, like David, we would do well to pray likewise. Our confidence is to be in the Lord – not in the arm of flesh or the capriciousness of our circumstances. As we lay our burdens at His feet, He equips us to stand – no matter how hard or long the wind blows. We can know for certain that He is working something for our good – even though perhaps we cannot possibly see how.
We also discover in our verses for today, Paul inviting us to pray with thanksgiving – not being thankful for the trial per se rather for the God Who brings peace to us through it and good from it. So often in life we kick against God’s best for us because it is hard. Yet all that He allows in the life of every heir of mercy is used to conform us to the image of His Son. He doesn’t delight in hardships for us rather these only come because He wants us to look like Jesus. If this could be done in an easier way, the Lord would do it but hardships are often His tool of choice as we seldom learn in plenty or in ease. Trust Him. Our Creator knows what He is doing for His created.
