A good sense of our own foolishness is a great step towards being wise particularly when it leads us to depend upon the Lord. None of us knows all things and God knows everything – even the end from the beginning. And we choose to rely on our own flesh rather than on Him? Where is the wisdom found in that? Not being in control is part of the human condition. God’s counsel is to be our guiding light, our portion. Though we perhaps cannot see clearly, we can trust that we remain safe in God’s hands Who sees and knows all – however that fleshes out.
God is our very satisfying portion. Wealth and riches, relationships, travels, work, hobbies or whatever - all pleasant and wonderful things to enjoy - may satisfy momentarily but never fully. It is only God Who is able to do this and keep us from being wanting and needy. It is He Who satisfies the troubled conscience, the hopeless heart and the trials and grief which at best nips at our heels. When God is our portion we have more than all else put together because in Him every need is met whether in life or death. His portion supplies our needs, comforts our hearts, relieves our griefs, guides our passage and takes us safely home to be our portion forever. Spurgeon writes: “‘I already have plenty,’ said Esau; this is the best things a human can say, but Jacob replies, ‘I have all I need,’ which is a note too high for carnal minds.”
