Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV)
Our minds and emotions and wills are housed in our souls and our human behavior is determined here. Whatever influences controlling our minds and emotions will ultimately control our wills and our actions. This is why God tells us in Scripture over and over again to look up. He is always telling us to look up – not in or out, but up. His desire is for us to set our hearts (which includes our desires and our emotions and our affections) and our minds (our thoughts) on things above - not on earthly things. Fixing our eyes on Jesus – His will and His ways for our lives. The writer of Hebrews tells us in Hebrews 12:1-3: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Our behavior is communicated to the outside world via the thoughts and intents of our hearts. While animals have instincts which protects and governs their behavior only humans have the capacity to be inhabited by God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. As Paul tells us In Romans 8:9 “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” Instincts are indispensable to animals just as the Holy Spirit is indispensable to us in our humanity as we were made to be governed by God Himself and not to be governed by our own evil inclinations. Genesis 6:5-6 tells us: “The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.” And this, only six chapters in! There is nothing new under the sun, Amen?
We were made to be governed by God Himself indwelling within the human soul teaching the mind, controlling the emotions, and directing the will. These will evidence our dependence upon Him as well as our unquestioning obedience to the Master Who desires to walk with us again in the coolness of the day.
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:5-6 (NIV)
