Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Romans 12:11 (NIV)

Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  2 Peter 1:10-11 (NIV)

The Lesson Learned

Diligence is a heavenly virtue as it is a means of cultivating Godliness.  God did not save us merely to remain the same or simply to give us a ticket to heaven.  The new birth – much akin to our original birth – is to begin a growth process of conforming us into the image of Jesus so that He would be the first-born among many brothers.  We are to be “imitators” of God as dearly loved children” (Ephesians 5:1).

We are designed by God, and we are His.  We are not our own.  It is His desire for our words and our actions to point others to sweet Jesus.  When our minds are weak, we are set more about the things of this earth and our blessings rather than our duties.  We become more interested in the comforts and entertainments of the flesh rather than walking and being for God – pleasing self before pleasing Him.  Strong saints are more mindful of their responsibilities.  We are to walk as Jesus walked, Who was always about His Father’s business.  The best way to joy and peace and assurance is to set our minds on our responsibilities, leaving the complaining behind.  The highway to comfort is to seek it less and duty more.  One never outgives God.  He will be no one’s debtor.  Godliness with contentment is great gain.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.  2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:11-12 (NIV)
