Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
How important it is for the Believer to keep their eyes fixed upon their Savior. We easily become distracted looking outward to our circumstances or inward to our own weak abilities rather than upward! We get bogged down and start to sink fast when we take our eyes off Him. Every. Time. Remember what happened to Peter when he walked on water. As long as his gaze was on the Master, he was Bear Bryant - like (forgive my pun!) yet when his eyes went to the waves he quickly began to sink and cry “Lord, save me!”. Immediately, Scripture states, Jesus reaches out and takes hold of him with the rebuke “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
It is ever the Holy Spirit’s work to turn our eyes off self and on to the Savior while Satan is constantly seeking to get us to focus on self and circumstances where we will never find peace, comfort or solace. Our safest place is looking unto Him. Learn of Him and of His ways. Those who claim to live in Him must walk as Jesus did. Follow closely after Him and He will never fail you.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Psalms 119:37 (NIV)
Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:6 (NIV)
