14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.”
7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”
20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.”
13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16 I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.”
9 “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.’”
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
6 We have sinned, even as our fathers did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly. 7 When our fathers were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea. 8 Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his mighty power known.
8 You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth. 9 For my own name’s sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. 10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another.
7 Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. 8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
"As we study the self-given names of God, we learn that God pursues us by revealing His nature and character to us. He shares the core of His being as the most powerful, high, holy, and righteous God through His names El-Shaddai, Elohim, Jehovah-Mekaddish, and Jehovah-Tsidkenu. He says, ‘I love you, child,’ by healing us as Jehovah-Rapha and providing for us as Jehovah-Jireh. When we face dark times and battles, He is our Banner, Jehovah-Nissi; our Shepherd, Jehovah-Rohi; our overwhelming peace, Jehovah-Shalom; and is always present as Jehovah-Shammah. And through His name Adonai, He tells us that we belong to Him.” Michael Youssef
“It is, perhaps, one of the hardest struggles of the Christian life to learn this sentence-‘Not to us, O LORD, not unto us, but to your name give glory.’ It is a lesson that God is always teaching us, and teaching us sometimes by the most painful discipline. Let a Christian begin to boast, ‘I can do all things,’ without adding ‘through Christ who strengthens me,’ and before long he will have to groan, ‘I can do nothing’ and bemoan himself in the dust. When we do anything for the Lord, and He is pleased to accept our doings, let us lay our crown at His feet and exclaim, ‘Not I, but the grace of God that is with me.’” C. H. Spurgeon revised by Alistair Begg
“God will never fail the eyes of them that look up to Him. His people will never be ashamed to put their hope in Him. His Name is a strong and mighty tower. Cast your care upon Him and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous fall.” BHY
“The enmity of the world is bitter in its assault against the people of Christ. Men will forgive a thousand faults in others, but they will magnify the most trivial offense in the followers of Jesus. Instead of vainly regretting this, let us make it work for us, and since so many are watching for our collapse, let it be a special time for walking very carefully before God. If we live carelessly, the watching world will soon see it, and multiple tongues will spread the story, exaggerated and emblazoned by the zeal of slander. They will shout triumphantly, ‘See! See how these Christians act! They are hypocrites to everyone.’ And so great damage will be done to the cause of Christ, and His name will be greatly maligned. The cross of Christ is in itself an offense to the world; let us take care that we add no offense of our own.” C. H. Spurgeon revised by Alistair Begg
“For Christians, ‘for the glory of God’ is not a throwaway phrase. It is profoundly relevant, and transforming, on a daily and weekly basis in how we live, and how we speak. Jesus’s teaching — even more convincingly than His spectacular works — demonstrated to the world that He was true. His enemies could sense it, and couldn’t help but admit, ‘You are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God’ (Mark 12:14). ‘Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God’ (Luke 20:21).” David Mathis
“Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.” Walter C. Smith
“The treasures of most men are perishing, earthly, cankered and moth-eaten treasures. Where is yours, O Christian? Is it in the world, or the next? Is it in present vanities, or future glory? Is it in present contentments, or in an everlasting inheritance? Is it in corn and wine or in the light of God’s countenance? Is it in profits, pleasures, and honors, or in grace and glory? Do you build, plant, and sow for heaven? Many profess the hope of heaven, but meanwhile in their conversations they savour only earthly things. If a man’s profession is ever so heavenly, but he is overtaken by earthly living, that man’s religion is vain. Never talk of a name in heaven, as long as your heart is buried in the earth.” Matthew Mead
“Though troubles assail us and dangers affright, Though friends should all fail us and foes all unite, Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide, The promise assures us, ‘The Lord will provide’. The birds, without garner or storehouse, are fed; From them let us learn to trust God for our bread. His saints what is fitting shall ne’er be denied. So long as ‘tis written, ‘The Lord will provide’. When Satan assails us to stop up our path, and courage all fails us, we triumph by faith. He cannot take from us, though oft he has tried, This heart cheering promise, ‘The Lord will provide’. No strength of our own and no goodness we claim; Yet, since we have known of the Savior’s great name, In this our strong tower for safety we hide: The Lord is our power, ‘The Lord will provide’.” John Newton
