Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Sometimes we need our emotions checked, Amen? And how do we go about doing this? What we should not do is flatter ourselves too much to detect or hate our own sin. Our expectations are often the culprit in the swinging of our emotions. We want what we want when we want it, right? Or we have what we do not want or want what we do not have. And when our expectations are not met we can be fractious, fearful, faint, and often frightful to be around. We are not to live in bondage to our emotions rather in bondage to Jesus. He is to be our Master. And what He allows in our lives is used to conform us into His image. And we want that because that is what God desires. It is the way to life in abundance.
When we get out of control – when we lose our perfect peace – we begin to look more like the adversary than Jesus. And whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did. When we get like this, we do well to take it straight to the Lord. He often allows circumstances in our lives to bring out what is in our stinking hearts – ouch – as it is often not a very pretty sight, Amen? Sit at His feet. Search the Scriptures. Like King David, we are to ask Him to search our hearts and point out our offensive ways within us – and we all have them if we are still living and breathing. We cannot change someone else’s heart but we can work on our own through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus delights for us to drink from His river of delights – for with Him is the fountain of life. He is well aware of all things – nothing misses His all seeing eye. When we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our hearts which is Him. It is always Him.
Sit at His feet. Bask in His love. Let Him fill you to overflowing with the Living Water so that you are no longer needy. Let Him fill you - not the world. Also, we are to seek to rid ourselves of earthly expectations – heaven is our home, not earth. He desires to meet our every expectation with His fullness. To be sure there are joys in abundance in our trek to heaven but that is not what we are to live for. God is so infinitely more. He states, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for us who love Him.” We are to get our expectations in line with His reality.
For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Psalms 84:11 (NIV)
