“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 24:45-51 (NIV)
Weak saints have their minds set on earthly things more than spiritual things – on their earthly blessings rather than on their heavenly duties. God intends for us to be His faithful servants while we walk through this dusty earth to our heavenly home. Leaving the aroma of Christ in our every encounter. Jesus was always about His Father’s work – as should we be. Remember what He tells us in the Sermon on the Mount? We are to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to us as well. Our first priority is Him. And God gives us what we need – not always what we may want but what we need. And when Jesus comes, He will richly reward us for all our service for Him - nothing goes unnoticed by His all-seeing eye - not even a cup of water given to a thirsty child. And we will never outgive Him. Christ will one day right every wrong. Wipe every tear. No action goes apart from His all-seeing eye. If earthly kings bestow both blessing and curses how much more so the Lord Jesus when He returns? Remember, His love is both measureless and fathomless. And all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him as well as all wealth and riches, glory and honor.
We think everything has to be so grand and large to be counted by Him, Amen? But Jesus never despises the day of small things either. Therefore we are not to be discouraged if our work for the Lord may appear menial by the world’s standards. God’s economy does not work that way. All things done for Him are rewarded. Remember, even if we are never earthly rewarded – it is the Lord that judges the hearts and the motives behind the action and He will Himself reward us. He knows how we are made and He has uniquely equipped each of us for our tasks to go forth in His power to do His will for His glory and for our good. We are never more like Jesus than when we serve.
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Ephesians 6:7-8 (NIV)
