The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.” Jeremiah 17:9-10 (NIV)
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
The heart is the central animating center for everything we do. That is why Scripture tells us to guard it above all else. The wording here means to protect, to keep, to obey, to observe, to behold, to watch, to inspect as well as to guard. We are chosen to be holy and blameless (not perfect) in His sight through His power, for His glory. Our hearts are our motivation headquarters – it is the center of our being. It defines and directs us, driving all we do and who we are.
Our contemporary notions of the heart are primarily feelings and emotions but the heart stands as the governing center composing of our hearts, minds and wills. It is the unity of all we are. God desires wholehearted devotion and a willing mind from His heirs of mercy. Jesus’ own heart’s purpose was always single and unflinching - resolute - He was always about His Father’s will. Our heart’s purpose should be as well. God knows better than we do that when our hearts are divided we become easily deluded and vulnerable prey for Satan’s arrows. Remember Satan’s question to Eve in the Garden of Eden - “Did God really say?” – placing doubt in her mind on the goodness of God. He is a master of delusions. Know the Truth to keep yourself from falling. The adversary delights in our downfall and we would do well not to give him a foothold.
The best way for the believer in Jesus to guard their hearts is by staying in His Word, applying its Truth to our lives and storing its treasure in our hearts. We are pray for the Holy Spirit to strengthen and enable us to adhere to these spiritual disciplines. This keeps us from falling and equips us to stand firm.
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45 (NIV)
For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 (NIV)
