I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted away within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Psalms 22:14-15 (NIV)
A man’s spirit can often endure great sickness, but a crushed and sinking spirit is most difficult to bear up under, Amen? It takes us to the very core of desperation. To be sure, deep depression can be unbearable to the sinking soul - when there is no “balm of Gilead” to be found. But Jesus. We need the Lord Jesus at all times but most particularly when we are walking through these deep, dark valleys. It is the most devastating of all travails and troubles. If we allow Him, His desire is to take us from “strength to strength” as we pass through these “valleys of Baca’s” (tears).
Pain is pain whether emotional, mental or physical. Ridicule is always hard to bear. Jibes and taunts hurled at us piercing us as arrows. Heartless cruel pain that cuts to the quick leaving us pillaged. Fiery sickness that burns in our bones when no cure prevails. Alone. Pitiful. Poor. Blind. Naked. Presently, we all will sometimes groan as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. The world is broken by our own choice and Jesus weeps too. That is why He came to make all things new. Things are presently not how they are supposed to be. We live in a sin sick world. But our Lord does not want us to give in to despair. He tells us to look up. Not in. Not out. But up. That is what He did prior to His cross. He focused on the “joy set before Him” and He endured it. He dwelt on what His cross was bringing about – many men to glory. That would be us. By His death and resurrection He made a way when there was no way for us to be with Him forever in eternal bliss. Like Jesus, our pains have purpose and our lives have promise for every believer in Christ Jesus. Fear not. Despair not. Believer, He has called you by name, you are His.
But now, this is what the LORD says-- he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Isaiah 43:1-3 (NIV)
