Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:6-7 (NIV)
To be sure, there is a treasury of fullness to be found in our Lord Jesus of purity, purpose, truth, wisdom, direction, power and all else. In following Him, we trade our poverty for His abundant riches, our ineptness and weaknesses for His sufficiency and strength, and our partial knowledge for His perfect wisdom and Truth. We go from fallen Adam – helpless and hopeless - to walking as the Savior walked - by the denial of self, through His power and for His glory. Jesus is the fullness of Him Who fills everything in every way. All those who claim to live in Him, Scripture states, must walk as Jesus did. He takes us from bankruptcy to life overflowing and bestows upon us a peace that passes human understanding. The Christian life is such an amazing source of spiritual power, peace, strength and life. Not much of a tradeoff is it from our fleshly selves to His righteousness? And this is only to name a few.
Paul prays for us in Colossians 1:10-12 (NIV): “And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” Through His mighty strength, we are strong indeed. He equips us to do “pala” things – things too hard for us to do in our flesh. Things like forgiveness, kindness to those unkind to us, peace that passes human understanding, contentment and a plethora of others.
Paul writes in Ephesians 1:22-23 (NIV): And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Jesus desires to live His life in and through us by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is our way because He is our Truth and our Life. He shows us the way and empowers us to walk in it as we deny self and take up our crosses and follow Him – listening to His still small voice. He is the way to the Father. And through the power of the Spirit, His yoke is easy and His burden, light. His desire is for our lives to emit His fragrances of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – the aroma of Christ – in ever increasing measure – equipping us to walk as He walked.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)
