“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 (NIV)
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 (NIV)
It is hard to see in the dark is it not? We stumble and fall and can’t seem to get our bearings. We go from here and there and everywhere seeking direction for our way while all the while “The Way” and “The Light” is shining brightly on us if we would merely open our eyes of faith and follow. Life can be loud and hard and distracting keeping us from focusing on the Master Who is our Way through it. We must learn to listen and love His still small voice. Satan and self will do anything to keep us from quietly listening before His throne and being in His Word. We must learn to keep our distractions at bay and to discipline our eyes and our ears and our emotions. Where our focus lies is hugely important here. The writer of Hebrews tells us to “fix our eyes on Jesus the Author and Perfecter of our faith”. When we get distracted and “darkness veils His lovely face, we rest on His unchanging grace; dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne” as the great hymn goes.
As a parent, if our child earnestly asked us what was the best way for them to go, what path was our desire for them to pursue, would we not excitedly and willingly tell them? How much more so with God. He is our Great Shepherd and He delights to make His will known – if we are but willing. The light is shining in the darkness but the darkness has not understood it. God waits patiently for us to be still and look up. He knows what is the very best for us but He will not force it upon us. It breaks His holy heart to see us playing in the sandbox when the beautiful beach is offered. As C.S. Lewis stated, “we are far too easily pleased”.
Don’t we want to experience all that our great God has intended for our lives here? We are the great losers if we miss His best by frittering away our moments, days, years on what will never make it through the fire that will test the quality of each man’s work. Be wise here and understand what the will of the Lord is.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
