“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:4-5 (NIV)
Christ alone is our Advocate when His child is found guilty before God for his sin. The merits of the Lord Jesus covers all our sins – His blood ever efficacious for our cause. It is He who turns a sinner into a saint. The merits of Christ Jesus take hold of us, drawing us out of deep waters and out of the dirt and the mire and gives us a firm place to stand. And we will stand because He is faithful and able to cause us to stand.
Satan charges that the guilty might receive condemnation and Christ takes up our case that we will not be cast away. And His blood shed is sufficient to cover every sin. Every. Sin. We have an Advocate to plead our cause. This is one of the greatest mysteries under heaven – that the innocent would bleed, die and then plead for such a one as us – as guilty and filthy as we are. Just one sin would keep us from a holy God – now and eternally. Just one. The wages of sin is always death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. And not only that, as far as the east is from the west is as far as He has removed our transgressions from us and He remembers them no more. This is true for every heir of mercy. He is our True, Sure and Lasting Hope.
Satan in all his evil malice seeks our destruction. He is not our friend. He tempts, he bites and he accuses. His desire is for all to be condemned as he. And if he cannot keep us from being saved, he will certainly seek to keep us from being used – desirous of sifting us like wheat and keeping us distracted from the eternal and focused on the temporal.
When the believer falls into sin and runs to the Advocate of their soul they are forgiven - completely and totally. Go, Jesus says, and sin no more.
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” 1 John 1:5-7 (NIV)
“To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father--to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.” Revelation 1:5-6 (NIV)
