Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV)
The temporary pleasures of this world while enjoyable are not comparable with the pure joy which comes from walking with Jesus. In keeping our faith strong we keep our joy strong – living our lives on an even keel even when the mountains quake, so to speak. Faith is far richer and more satisfying than any earthly substitutes could ever be - lauded as they are. How can we be sad when all the heavenly treasures await our arrival – out of Satan’s reach forever?
Is it not fitting for God’s people to rejoice? The kingdom of heaven consist in joy – where there will be no more tears, no more sorrows. Joy is the second fruit of the Spirit - the second listed of nine – and if one has received the Spirit through faith we have all of them. We do not lack one. Yet, God often shows priority in His listings in Scripture. And we find “joy” at the top nestled sweetly between “love and peace” – three descriptors of which most - if not all - would delight to be filled and described by.
As believers in sweet Jesus, we are to be the most joyful of all people. He is to be the crown of our heart’s delight and we are to rejoice in Him. He is the pearl of great price. He lifts us up from the mirey pit and sets our feet on a Rock giving us a firm place to stand and a new song in our mouth – a hymn of praise to our God. The more we know Him, the more we will love Him and the more we love Him the more we will serve Him and rejoice and delight in Him – blessedness upon blessedness, grace giving way to more grace. Rejoice that the waves of mercy, grace, peace, and joy continually wash over us.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25 (NIV)
Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 (NIV)
