All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. Isaiah 40:6 (NIV)
Where do we place our trust? Is it in the fleeting temporal or in what will stand forever? If we place all our happiness and comforts in earthly blessings and health – which are here today and tomorrow gone – then when the day of adversity arrives (as it surely will) we quickly see the emptiness of the material world. As King Solomon stated – it is a chasing after the wind – vanity at best. The world falls short of our expectations whether friends, wealth or earthly interests. In the day of adversity will they be able to save us – to deliver us out of the hands of death and judgment? Creature comforts will never fully satisfy the soul. They were never intended to. We find by experience the unsuitableness and ultimate dissatisfaction in all these things. “Miserable comforters” as Job puts it. There is only infinite fullness in Jesus. He is perfectly suited for every need of the soul. In His fullness we experience grace giving way to grace giving way to grace as the waves roll in at the seashore.
It is to our own harm that we seek to find fulfillment in only what God can give. Simply put, it is going to the wrong well for satisfaction. We will always be found wanting and needing more to fill those needy empty cups of ours. Whereas with Jesus our cups overflow. Also, the more we fill ourselves with the world the less we will delight in Christ missing out on all the fullness He desires to bestow. He meets every need transcending all the beauty of the world and everything it has to offer. How foolish we often are, wearing ourselves out, fretting and striving for more when God says, “Be still and know that I am God”. In God we have all. In Him is Sufficiency.
For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you. Psalms 84:11-12 (NIV)
