Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it. Psalms 37:34 (NIV)
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. Psalms 31:24 (NIV)
The two guys were depressed. Walking along talking with each other dejected, disappointed and disillusioned. “But we had thought” was scrambling the Truth from their eyes. Then Jesus arrives on the scene and restores their proper perspectives by reminding them of what the Scriptures had said. Sometimes, perhaps I should say oftentimes, the outcomes of things are not how we expected God’s hand to move, Amen? We too can become depressed, dejected, disappointed and disillusioned keeping the Truth scrambled from our eyes. Yet, the story isn’t over yet. What we don’t see is far greater than what we do see. Believers can be confident that all things allowed will work out for their ultimate good and for His glory – never one surpassing the other – even and perhaps especially - in the wait. No matter how extremely difficult our circumstances may be, we can trust Him with our lives and with the lives of all we hold dear.
Go back to the Word. Always go back to the Word. What does Scripture say? Indeed, God tells us, hope deferred makes the heart sick. “But we had thought” goes rambling through our minds as well – stealing our joy and filling us with discontentment and hopelessness. We must not let our pre-conceived plans and thinking become foolish, futile or dark and suppress what we know is the Truth with a lie. The adversary loves for us to question God, whispering in our ears that God does not care, that He isn’t faithful to His promises or loving toward all He has made. Go back to the Truth and believe God – one does not have to force a willing mind to believe and remember, the deeds of highest character spring from those of the deepest values. We are not to let unbelief blind us of what we know to be true. God loves us with an everlasting love and leads us with cords of kindness, even rejoicing over us with singing. He has not left us as orphans. The Holy Spirit empowers us and strengthens us as we walk through our “Valley of Baca” (tears) waiting for His mighty Hand to move on our behalf. He is working in the wait. He is always working in the wait.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12 (NIV)
May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you. Psalms 33:22 (NIV)
