He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:15-20 (NIV)
Being both fully God and fully Man, Jesus came to reveal God to the world – to make His Father known. Make no mistake about it, Scripture tells us Jesus and the Father are One. When we see the face of Christ we see the face of God. Christ stated that anyone who had seen Him had seen the Father as well (John 14:9) – Jesus being the visible manifestation of the invisible God. He both preceded the creation and is Sovereign over it. Firstborn here implying Sovereignty. No one compares to our Savior. He is above all.
Paul writes in Philippians Two that Christ, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped but made Himself nothing – being made in human likeness and being found in appearance as a man He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross. God exalted Him to the highest place giving Him the Name that is above every name that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue confess that He is Lord.
One fine day every knee will bow to our King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s fully demonstrating His Supremacy as well as His honor, reward and due. Meanwhile, He is to be both our Savior and Lord – they go hand in hand.
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Luke 6:46-49 (NIV)
