Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:9-13 (NIV)
We function best with rightful purpose and determination when we are fueled by righteous Christlike zeal. It motivates us to speak Truth, live Truth and share Truth because we know that Truth is too good to be hoarded, it must be given. A person with purpose and passion will speak and act. Zeal will demonstrate itself – it cannot be silent or frozen. That’s why the Apostle Paul tells us we are never to be lacking in zealousness for the Lord. It is amazing to see what can be accomplished when principled focused emotions are fueling the fire that burns within. When one with Godly principle is “stirred” they can be used to change the world. A cursory study of the disciples will demonstrate that Truth.
Pray that this year we may be holy, humble, zealous, and patient; having closer communion with Jesus, and remaining in the fullness of His love. Pray His desires are our desires, His ways our ways. Pray that we might be an example and a blessing to others, and that we may live more for the glory of our Master than for our own name. The motto for our year must be, “Never be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.”
The way of the world’s salvation is through the zeal of the church – made up of individuals - leading the charge. We must each take responsibility as God holds us accountable for our own lives. Also, while knowledge and talent are useful and are not to be despised, it is passionate zeal through which great exploits are accomplished. Jesus wore zeal as a cloak – He knew of no loitering or half-hearted devotion. Rather, He had a wiling mind. Our zeal is strengthened by the remembrance of Christ’s example and a deep sense of gratitude will also nourish and strengthen this zeal. Pray that we will not grow weary in this and lose heart.
Zeal gives us courage and resolution to grapple with the difficulties we meet with in life. Many who profess the Gospel fail to endure rather flee when troubles come - as they most assuredly will. Hearts easily fail with loss of zeal. The Christian life is proven by a heroic, zealous spirit in spite of our trials and tribulations as it is so other worldly in its nature.
So many run the race so few finish well. It is oxymoronic is it not to see a bold sinner and a fearful saint? To see hell march forward and the saints of God trembling in fear? Take heart and be zealous and strong. Let Him lead you with courage and bring you home with honor.
“Be strong, all you people of the land,” declares the LORD, “and work. For I am with you,” declares the LORD Almighty. Haggai 2:4 (NIV)
