Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39 (NIV)
The sweetest prayers come from private devotions, Amen? When we can pour out privately all that is burdening our hearts. And the best news is that He listens intently - as a loving earthly father would - to his child in need or pain. He also tells no one, nor does He mock or shame – these things are all from the adversary of our souls. It is precious when no ear hears but God’s.
Approach Him in humility – for what do we have to bring the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords? Nothing but need in the hands we bring and only to the cross can we cling – right? Humility is always the proper position for every heir of mercy. Face to the ground is truly our rightful place. As we humble ourselves, it is He who exalts us – lifting us up from the dirt and mire of our sins and depravity and giving us a firm place to stand. And He causes us to stand because He is faithful and able to cause us to stand.
Also, as we are His children and we can come to Him for His love and protection. Indeed, the beloved of the Lord can rest secure in Him because He shields him all day long. Scripture tells us “the one the Lord loves rests between His shoulders” (Deuteronomy 33:12B).
Lastly, God desires for his children to persevere in prayer. Answers do not always come quickly yet comfort will. It is a sufficient comfort to know that He is in control of all things and that no plan of His can be thwarted. He makes known the end from the beginning and He always, always has our best interest at heart – even in the most horrific and difficult. Just as He did for the Lord Jesus Who through His cross brought many men to glory. God’s will is always best for His children – we can count on it even though it may be extremely difficult to embrace, it is the glorious promise of Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” God will either change our circumstances or change our hearts through our circumstances – the latter being the far greater miracle. Let it rest in God’s will as He will most assuredly determine what is best. Be content to rest with your prayers in His loving hands Who knows when to give, what to give, and what to withhold.
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
