The Lesson Learned

Beware of seeking your own glory even in the smallest of acts.  Pride is such an insidious monster taking hold and permeating our beings before we even know it.  Learn to check it at the first thought.  Seriously, what do we have that we did not receive and if we have received it why would we boast? Writes the Apostle Paul.  We must learn to be liberated from self-aggrandizement.  Christ did not come seeking His own glory and neither should we.  He was all about glorifying His Father through His words and works and we are to do likewise.

We live in a day where “self” is on the throne – self-promotion, self-centeredness, self-exaltation are often lauded and applauded.  Actually, since the fall, when has it not been?  God is the only being in the universe where self-exaltation is the highest of virtues.  With Him there is no flaw - His Name and His Word are to be exalted above all things.  God’s people are to exalt Him through their actions and their words – not themselves.  It is God who is to exalt a man.  When one walks in humility, He will lift them up in due time.  Therefore, Scripture tells us to humble ourselves under His mighty hand.  A far cry from those who take self-exaltation into their own hands.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.  Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)

The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.  Proverbs 15:33 (NIV)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.  1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV)
