“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
The great antidote to spiritual depression and to standing strong when the winds blow hard is a fixed and thorough knowledge of Scripture. Not simply hearing it, but knowing it in our core. Our indispensable duty at all times is to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not simply on our own understanding. We are to know that we know that we know that God’s Word is true Truth and we are to stand fast in it. We do ourselves and our families much disservice when we fail in this.
When we are confident in His Truth, we move forward on a higher level. Indeed, to walk in the confidence of His Word is the highest spiritual note one can attain. It is not confidence in self rather confidence in Him Who empowers us. This holy confidence extinguishes the fear of man. It is not our feelings, it is not our opinions, it is knowledge of the Scriptures applied to the life through His power that will keep us from falling. This was Jesus’ way as well as the way of the Apostles and it is to be the modern Christian’s way. If you do not know Truth you will not be able to stand when all the winds of this life blow hard. We must study and learn Truth for our own soul’s sake. Even the Bereans checked to see if what Paul was saying was true.
Jesus Himself told us our freedom comes from His Word in John 8:31-32 (NIV): “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” As we know and walk and rely upon the Truth it fills us with joy and certainty, keeping us from being barren and unfruitful particularly when the storms howl. When we lack knowledge we are infective for both ourselves and others.
It is a sad case when Christians have very little in their lives to show that they belong to the Lord Jesus. They forget that they have been forgiven and cleansed from unrighteousness and purchased by the blood of Christ. They choose to live as if it never happened, remaining bound in their miseries and barren bringing forth unfruitfulness rather than allowing the streams of the Living Water of the Holy Spirit to flow freely from within them. They remain ineffective and shaken by doubts and circumstances. Yet, joy and confidence in the Lord – not self - is a beautifully winsome thing. Holy confidence allowed David to fight Goliath and Joseph of Arimathea to go boldly to beg for Jesus’ body. People are attracted to it like flies to honey. They are not attracted to the person rather to Christ in that person Who powerfully enables that soul to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord Jesus – a walk that is totally unearthly in its nature. His service is our happiness and obedience to Him is our glory – nothing goes unseen.
The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? Psalms 27:1 (NIV)
