“Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves rests between his shoulders.” Deuteronomy 33:12 (NIV)
He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Isaiah 40:11 (NIV)
The heart of the Savior is most wonderfully kind. He is not only kind, but approachable, tender, gracious and loving. He is the Good Shepherd Who lays down His life for the sheep. Because He is so tender, any weakness from His sheep melts His holy Heart. Our sighs and feebleness, hurts and pains draw forth His compassion and moves His mighty Hand. He is the faithful and high Priest Who ever lives to intercede for us at the right Hand of God. He purchased us with His blood and we belong to Him. We are His. He is responsible for each lamb, bound by His covenant not to lose one. We are carried close to His heart in boundless affection. There is a tender nearness here – close to His Heart. We are dearly loved and nothing will separate us from that love. Anything that gets to us, must first come through the Savior’s all-powerful, loving Hands – even the most trying and difficult. He always has our best interest at heart though we may remain befuddled on how He can work out all things (including the most difficult) for our ultimate good and His glory never one surpassing the other. He is conforming us into His image and He only allows those things in our lives that work toward that magnificent end.
Remember as well, the dove found no resting place until he came back to the ark and to be sure we can kind no true rest apart from the Lord Jesus. Earthly things will not satisfy and bring us the peace that passes understanding that we all so long for. God alone gives the soul rest. The world offers merely a wandering in a “trackless waste” getting us nowhere fast. The stanza from the hymn How Firm A Foundation states it right: “His mercies, how tender how firm to the end. Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend.”
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
