For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 (NIV)
If one desires to be free from the acts of evil we must not toy with it. Certainly Samson would have to agree. We should never willingly place ourselves in situations where we are prone to fall. If you are on a diet you should not wallow around in a donut shop. Or if you have addictions toward whatever – don’t play around with the whatever as you are sure to get burned. Ask me how I know. Sometimes God will take away all desire for something you have chronically yearned for Him to do but oftentimes He will allow the desire to remain and give us the power to withstand it by trusting in Him. Nevertheless, we are never to toy with sin. It is particularly bad when we plan and scheme and contrive it. King David’s example comes to mind.
If we would like to be free from sin and its deadly consequences we must learn to flee from it. It is wise to make a covenant with our eyes not to be fascinated or gaze longingly at wickedness. We flee from those with contagious diseases or tornados or storms in the sea for that matter, how much more so should we flee from things that cause our souls such harm. Better to leave my cloak behind than to lose my character. Joseph would agree.
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
