When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:20-23 (NIV)
The sinful life will always produce destruction and never be beneficial to a soul. It constantly leaves thorns and thistles in its wake. Indeed, every sin carries with it a death to something. We seek pleasure but we receive pain and conviction. There is no soul rest in sin either. Play whatever it is out to the end before jumping in to see if the consequences are worth it to you.
Christ longs for us to be freed from the bondages of slavery, sin and destruction and He died to enable us to do so. His desire is for us to have life and life to the full in all its great abundance and sweetness and joy. Yoking ourselves to the slavery of sin does not produce the abundance Jesus died to give us. In our own flesh we are no match for Satan, sin or self. We are all terribly weak and wanting. This is evidenced when we have been burnt before yet we persist in going back to playing in the fire and wallowing in the pig pen of our own poor choices. Over and over. Again and again. We are so foolish and easily deluded. Sin will never yield true and lasting pleasure yet we are continually lured by its siren’s call. Flee rather than be entrapped. It will yield no lasting satisfaction and it never produces what it promises. Bring past enslavements to mind if you should question this.
As believers, sin will rob us of our peace of mind and our fellowship with the Savior. It will hinder our prayer life and bring a darkness to our soul, stealing from us the joy of the Lord. God’s desire is for us to turn back from our point of departure. Run to His feet for forgiveness. As the prodigal son’s father, He is ever looking and waiting for us to return and runs to greet us with loving open arms and forgiveness. He never turns away a repentant heart. He loves us with an everlasting love and even rejoices over us with singing. Freedom is only found in being yoked to the Master. How could we turn from a Father so loving, so dear, so merciful, so kind?
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:11-14 (NIV)
