“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
Every minute of every hour of every day the human heart needs Jesus. And where Christ is, He rules. If our hearts are filled with worldly lusts, Christ does not reside there. He is not simply Someone we run to when our needs scream out. A little lagniappe for our lives. He is a “with us” God, desirous to walk with us “in the cool of the day” and He is to be on His rightful throne of our hearts - He does not share it with anything or anyone else we may perhaps seek to place there. His desire is to be with us when we wake up and when we walk through the day, when we lie down and when we get up. That is, constantly. “A Friend that sticks closer than a brother,” Scripture states. He both empowers and equips us to walk in a manner worthy of the Gospel. And He has given us the great Gift of the Holy Spirit indwelling within every believer to accomplish what in the flesh we could not – His good, pleasing and perfect will. He is but a breath away.
Just as Moses told the Israelites regarding the Shema that the Law was to be ever before them, Jesus’ desire is for us to dwell upon Him – His will and His ways. He is the Word made flesh. We see in Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NIV): “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” The Law was to be ever before them and in them – a constant reminder of Who was in control and on the throne of their lives. Jesus was the Word made flesh and dwelt among us, “fleshing out”, if you will, the Word flawlessly. Our Lord Jesus is our Burden lifter – comforting us and carrying us through on eagle’s wings. He strengthens us, uplifts us and encourages us, holding us with His powerful right Hand and He cleanses us from all our unrighteousness. What more do we need? This is God’s will for us - to be “Joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” as well as “thankful in all circumstances”. Come to the fountain that freely flows and never runs dry and to the Living Water that heals, strengthens, comforts and guides. Never question God’s immense love for you.
The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.” Jeremiah 31:3 (NIV)
