“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8 (NIV)
The Israelites in the wilderness were constantly being exposed to change, Amen? The fiery cloudy pillar of the Lord’s great Hand, led them through narrow mountain canyons, up the hillsides and through the arid waste of the wilderness on their trek to the abundance of the promised land. Sounds like some of our own journeys through this dusty earth, Amen? We have many ebbs and flows of earthly hopes and dreams! They did not remain long in one place, and God used all these varying experiences to strengthen their faith, as well as their bodies, and to teach them to follow hard after Him. The safest place for them to be was in His presence. We, like they, want the same thing – to stand firm in all the will of God mature and fully assured – whether we, like they, know this at a core level or not. God is always better than our expectations, dreams or fantasies. We do not want to be outside of His good, pleasing and perfect will – even if it is incredibly difficult, like the Israelites of the past. Further, His desire is for us to follow Him faithfully sans complaining and arguing (ugh!). Heaven is our home, we are not to seek security here, settling for the lesser objects of nature. We rest secure in Him, not in this earth as things will always be continually changing. Nothing stays the same. That is good news and bad news.
God has a perfect plan for each one of our lives and we do not want to miss it by going our own stinking ways and frittering away this one life we have - and of which we are held accountable for, BTW. There is nothing more wasteful than a wasted life, Amen? His plans for us are to give us hope and a future and not to harm us. If we are to enjoy what God promises we must be sure to follow where He leads. Running ahead and planning out our own lives without seeking His will lead the believer to places they wish they had not been. Remember, if the Lord is our trust, He will most assuredly be our delight. He guides us with His eye ever upon us and with the Truth of His Word. Remember as well, in Him is all the fullness of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Jesus is our great Example. We are to follow His lead. He went about always doing His Father’s will – accomplishing much good on His errands of mercy – personally – doing it with His own hands. Likewise, those who claim to live in Him must walk as Jesus did – through His power and for His glory. This includes denial of self (which is in all four Gospels plus Philippians) to take hold of the life that is truly life. One never outgives God. We are to prepare our minds for action and not become weary in doing good.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
