“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:11-12 (NIV)
Believers in Jesus are engaged in the fight of faith. As citizens of the Kingdom of God, the Bible tells us that we are opposed by another kingdom which is also a spiritual kingdom. Therefore, throughout our journey through this dusty earth we should expect opposition. And Satan is extraordinarily wily and subtle. We will experience attacks of our faith and Scripture tells us we are to stand firm in these attacks, mature and fully assured – in His power and armor and for His glory and for our good. We wrestle not with mere flesh and blood but against the powers and principalities and rulers of this dark world and against spiritual wickedness in high places – in and through all types of people and in and through all types of ways. This is not to make us fearful, but rather prepared. Greater is He that is in us than he who is in the world.
Again, we would do well to remember that Satan is very subtle as well as powerful and able. He can masquerade as an angel of light rather than the deep darkness that he truly is. That is why it is extremely important to know God’s Word fully as the adversary of our souls often mixes the truth of God’s Word with a lie. Be on your guard standing firm in the faith. Let nothing shake you. Satan is always seeking to attack, ruin and destroy the work of our Lord Jesus in the lives of His saints and he is particularly interested in destroying the work of grace through Christ alone. When we become a believer, we become a special target of his attention. His desire is to make us miserable or to make us suffer or to make us not useful. And he loves our grumbling and complaining as it dishonors God’s best for our lives. He cares not a whit about the nominal and lukewarm believers which are making no kingdom impact and leaving our Lord Jesus nauseated. And if he cannot keep us from being saved, he will certainly attempt to keep us from not being used. He is after ruining and destroying the work of God in the lives of the saints, marring their testimonies. Indeed, it is often counted as a proof of our faith when he is chronically seeking to make us miserable. The saints of the past often acknowledged this. Yet let’s not give him too much credit as we ourselves struggle with obedience without Satan’s help. The Christian battles the world, the flesh and the adversary.
The Believer’s life is to be a balanced life of the mind, the heart and the will. We belong to Him – taking every thought captive to obedience, loving Him with all our hearts and making His will our way. The lack of this balance causes us to be lopsided creating trouble and discord within and without as well as disrupting our peace and joy and making us an easy prey for the adversary. Resist him.
“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
