The Lesson Learned

Dead hearted rote prayers are not suitable petitions for an alive, loving, relational and “with-us” God, Amen? Seriously, how can our Father possibly enjoy our repetitious, lazy and listless supplications – and most of us (if not all) stand guilty of this at some point unless of course some urgent specific need arises in which we are begging Him for deliverance. To bring down fire from heaven it must be sent up to heaven by our fervent prayers. Remember as well, our Father is loving and He desires our love back in return – at all times. Indeed, Jesus tells us the greatest commandment in the Law is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  Our fervency in prayer is a sweet aroma coming before Him as incense.  Also, when we do not offer up God our finest in prayer, we are robbing Him of His due and us from our best for His greatness is beyond all measure. Our dead hearted prayers are not a suitable sacrifice for the King of kings and the Lord of lords, Amen?
In this crazy busy, loud and full of distractions world we live in, it is often hard “to be still and know that He is God” yet if we do not do this, we fall prey to independence of Him leading us into all sort of ills - anxiety, depression, worry, selfishness, anger, rage, malice, slander and the list goes on and on and on.  Amazingly, we were made to be in fellowship with the Creator of all things and when we are not, it leads to all of the maladies of this sin sick world - as Satan would have it.  That is why the adversary of our souls seeks to keep us distracted. Remember, James tells us in James 5:16: The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Earnest, persistent prayers from the saints are essential for us to walk in a manner worthy of the Gospel. Whereas halfhearted, rote prayers are in themselves self-defeating.
God wants us to want to be with Him.  He is a “with-us” God. To walk with Him and talk with Him along life’s narrow way - as the chorus of the old hymn goes - is an immense gift as “None other is so loving so good and kind”. Our sincere prayers to Him bless Him and us as well. We need both the walking prayer – talking with Him as we walk along the way and time alone with Him in the prayer closet. We might argue we are never alone to be able to accomplish this because of all the demands from work or children or others. It will always lie in our priorities.  Two examples come to mind – one is Jesus Who would get up very early in the morning while it was still dark - sans coffee and lights and warmth - to meet with His Father.  And Jesus, of course, is our greatest example. A human example was Susanna Wesley, mother of nineteen children, who would daily pray for each child while sitting in her chair and pulling her apron over her head to keep from being interrupted or distracted. Her fervent prayers resulting in the likes of Charles and John Wesley who shaped the course of Christian history and thus changed the world. Never neglect time with the Lord in prayer and the study and application of His Word.  It leads to a fullness of life allowing us to take hold of the life that is truly life and one with no regrets.
