“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
We seem to chronically seek healing in our brokenness from all the wrong sources and all the wrong places, Amen? Pursing a quick fix which merely serves as a band-aid at best. We wrongly think something external can heal our wounded and hurting hearts and souls - a person, a place or a thing that will relieve our pains and our problems. Yet, Jesus calls to us internally saying, “Come to me”, “Take up your cross and follow me”. It is only Jesus who can heal completely and totally and thoroughly. It is Jesus Who brings freedom to our bondage and gives us a firm place to stand. He is the One who changes the leanings of the human heart and He does so freely and abundantly as we come to Him. He is the Living Water completely filling every crevasse of our needy souls. And He is the better hope – the only true, sure and lasting hope of the world.
Yet, we so often refuse to listen to His “still, small voice”, Amen? Instead, we run to sources that will forever be leaving us unhealed, unsatisfied, needy and shaking our empty cups wanting more. It is Christ alone Who truly satisfies – totally and completely. Nothing else will accomplish it. We can spend our lives trying but, in the end, we will come up with the same results - still wanting. Ask Solomon when you get to heaven. Oh, the measures we take to feel loved, appreciated, admired, joyful, accepted, satisfied, peaceful and a plethora of other human desires and dreams. Remember, it is God Who redeems our life from the pit, who crowns us with love and compassion, and satisfies our desires with good things. No matter what the world touts, it will never live up to its promise – it is not even capable. The creator of the human soul is the only satisfier of the human soul. If you seek Him, He will be found by you.
“Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains, for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron*." Psalms 107:10-16 (NIV)*
