“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.” Isaiah 26:3-4 (NIV)
A gentle and peaceful spirit within is precious in the Lord’s sight. He came not blasting, yelling and screaming at us (though He had every right and reason to), rather gentle and humble in heart. Mercy, kindness and love oozed from His gracious Being. And He is to be our example as we walk through this dusty earth en route to our heavenly home. If God is our heavenly Father, we are to have a peaceful spirit and He has sweetly given us the Means by which to have one through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.
God’s grace gives every believer in Christ Jesus the Holy Spirit to equip, strengthen, teach and enable us to walk as Jesus did – in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ. The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:9B: “And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” The Fruit of the Spirit He bestows in us is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. While every believer has the Holy Spirit, we can shrink His Fruit in our lives by our own poor choices instead of growing them in ever increasing measure. We may claim faith with our mouths but our hearts and actions can be far from Him. John tells us in 1 John 2:5B-6: “This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.” Not perfectly mind you, as we are all in process, yet walking forward in the right direction - becoming more and more like our Savior and less and less like us. God’s love is made complete in us as we are obedient to His Word – His revealed will.
As we walk by the Spirit, He reminds us of how greatly we are loved and how valuable we are in His sight – even in the most difficult of circumstances. There is not one thing which God allows in the life of His heirs of mercy that is not for their ultimate good (even though perhaps unutterably difficult) and for His glory – never one surpassing the other. Therefore, we can trust Him in all the hard of life as we rest secure in Him allowing Him to keep us in perfect peace which is unearthly in its nature.
