Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old hewill not turn from it.  Proverbs 22:6(NIV)

The Lesson Learned

Child training is represented here as a narrowing of a child’s conduct away from evil and towards godliness. It is starting them in the right direction – according to their bents and God given giftings - directing them into His Truth and the pathway of godly living - the proper way of wisdom. In this, parents are to put forth their finest efforts.  Blessed are the children of those parents who follow the Lord’s command.  Blessed, too, are the parents who take this word to heart. To be sure, the cost comes at the front end and the rewards later but the opposite is true for those who neglect their God given responsibility.  It is always easier to give in (or give up!) allowing the child free reign in going their own way as well as indulging their every whim.  Yet, lack of discipline will prove to be a snare both for the child and the parent.

While such training may provide fertile ground for godly growth and wisdom through the power of the Holy Spirit, it serves as no absolute guarantee.  Many parents have sought to follow this directive and the children have strayed from their training.  Yet, they will not be able to“turn it off” – it will always be ringing in their ears.  It is generally true, however, that those children bought up in Christian homes under the influence of parents that seek God’s will and ways will follow that training.

The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.  Proverbs 20:7 (NIV)

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love theLORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.  Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NIV)

Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.  Psalms 127:3 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
