My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 2:1-6 (NIV)
While it is certainly folly to lean on our own fleshly understanding, the Bible teaches us we are to trust fully in the understanding of the unlimited wisdom and knowledge of God. So many of our problems stem from our lack of knowledge of God’s wisdom and ways. We are told in Scripture to study to show ourselves approved unto God, workman who do not need to be ashamed who can correctly handle God’s Word. Many of the things that cause us the most difficulties in our lives stem from the result of leaning on our own understanding rather than His. Some of these things are done in ignorance, others blatantly go against what we know to be true. We rest our intellect upon our Omnipotent Creator knowing that there is nothing wiser. He alone knows the end from the beginning. He alone can state His purposes will stand. From His mouth comes knowledge and knowledge is pleasant to the soul.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8 (NIV)
