did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:25-29 (NIV)
Most everything can be shaken, Amen? Life can be as shifting as sinking sand. It does not behoove us to rely on or trust in that which is not stable, firm, secure and continually changing with the wind. Vacillation has its name written on all things earth bound – nothing temporal is stable beneath these skies. Yet God’s Word tells us there are things that cannot be shaken and these are the things we are to cling to. Indeed, He is the constant One and the changing of the world serves to highlight the stability of our Savior. Forever the same, never changing. God says of Himself, “I the Lord do not change.” Isn’t that so uber comforting – He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow - not whimsical as we are - and we can take that to the proverbial bank.
When we stand at the foot of the cross, trusting alone in the merits of our Savior’s blood shed for our sins, nothing can interfere with our salvation and the inheritance of all the riches of heaven. He has loved us with an everlasting love. We are a child of the King and no fleeting failures can touch that. Everything that He allows in our lives is ultimately for our good and His glory, one never surpassing the other. Even if the world takes our all we can still say God is our Father and in His house are many rooms – one prepared just for us. We can rejoice in the God of our salvation and be calm when we see the wreck of everything earthbound. We are loved by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords Who always has our best interest at heart and not one thing can ever effect that. We often live as this world is our be all end all but nothing could be further from the truth. Our country is Immanuel’s land. Heaven is our home and earth is our sojourn there and it matters eternally how we live our lives in the here and now – do not be fooled or be found unaware of this Truth.
Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. One thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done. Psalms 62:5-12 (NIV)
