I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Psalms 130:5-6 (NIV)
Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! Isaiah 30:18 (NIV)
Wait. It is definitely a four letter word. No one likes it, at least no one I know of that is. We find it difficult to wait in lines, in doctors offices, in traffic jams but even harder to wait for diagnostic test results, children to return home, a job, a marriage or a baby. Everyone can fill in the blank for what they are waiting for and our waiting is usually not accompanied by a warm and fuzzy feeling, Amen?
Abraham was given a promise. And he waited. And he waited. And he waited. And still, barrenness. To make it happen faster, his wife convinced him to sire an heir with her handmade – big mistake. When given a promise from the Lord, it is much better to wait rather than to take things in our own hands and run ahead of God. God’s timing is very often not our own. Yet, it is always perfect. He is working in the wait through many lives – not just our own - bringing about His perfect plans which is to bring many men to glory. Jesus was to be the firstborn among many brothers. And believe me, we are thankful for that whether we realize it now or not. Waiting and trials are often two of His most used tools to bring about our transformation.
It is generally the tempest tossed believer that runs to the Savior’s feet rather than the child that immediately gets the goodie, Amen? How we respond in the wait is very important as God desires to use this, even this, to point others to the Lord Jesus. This happens when our actions are other worldly in their nature. When we do not gripe and complain, be morose and moody rather be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer, we make kingdom impact. It is far too easy to blend with the world. He knows what we need when we need it and we should not dishonor Him by our unworthy doubts and fears. In waiting we are to run to His feet to allowing Him to glorify Himself in our weaknesses. He is our Helper and Strong Tower and we do not wait without hope. We know He has our best interest at heart – even, or maybe even particularly, in the wait. He will hold us up, as underneath us are His everlasting arms.
My righteousness draws near speedily, my salvation is on the way, and my arm will bring justice to the nations. The islands will look to me and wait in hope for my arm. Isaiah 51:5 (NIV)
