He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. Ephesians 2:17-18 (NIV)
Jesus wants us to know Him – to truly and fully know Him and to experience His love and peace, His graciousness and power, His forgiveness and mercy and on and on. This, of course, will take us throughout all eternity, Amen? As Paul pens in in Romans 11:33 (NIV): “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?’ ‘Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?’ For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” Yet, what we can know, we should seek to know, right?
God wants us to increase in our knowledge and in our confidence of what we know of Him – for our best – to know that we know that we know. No longer babes, rather we are to grow up in Him. This will bring us perfect peace as Isaiah tells us in Isaiah 26:3 (NIV): “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.” No longer tossed around by the storms of life rather resting secure in Him even as the winds howl fierce.
We will grow in knowledge and peace and love and assurance as we practice the spiritual disciplines God has laid forth for us in Scripture. We should strain to know Him more through the study and application of His Word, through prayer, through Scripture memory, through application of His Truth’s learned. We were never meant to stay the same, or to merely sit, soak and sour, rather we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds as Paul tells us in Romans 12:2 (NIV), seeking to take every thought captive and making it obedient to Christ Jesus. God desires for us to be conformed into the image of His Son that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. And only in Jesus is there found perfect peace that passes understanding which will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We are to keep our eyes fixed on Him the Great Perfecter of our faith.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 (NIV)
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV)
