Zeal: A Heavenly Fire

The Lion Loosed

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.  1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV)

The Lesson Learned

Paul was zealous for all things of the Lord.  He had purpose, passion and clarity of pursuit – even to the point of beating his own body into slavery in an effort not to be disqualified for the prize of a “Well done, good and faithful servant”.  He loved His Lord and stands as an amazing and stellar example of following hard after our Savior with all the passion he could muster.  He felt the heat of  heavenly zeal pulsating through his veins placing vigor and agility in his soul setting forth an example for all subsequent followers.

Christian zeal is to the soul as wind to the sails or wings to the bird.  The true zealot is ever fervent in Spirit yet not in show – he is zealous for God’s great Name and not for himself.  He is passionate about making much of God in this world and is always giving glory to Him.  He must become greater we must become less.  How foolish it would be for the created to take the praise due only the Creator.  Remember, zeal is guided by the Word and not one’s own desires or fancy.  It receives its praise from God and not men.  The devil and the world hate the zeal of the believer and where true zeal is, there will be opposition yet Christ urges us on in this great pursuit.

Heart Savor

The Lion Roars

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Romans 12:11 (NIV)

  • We are never to be lacking in zeal but keep our spiritual fervor serving the Lord.
  • We are to be zealous for the Lord’s great Name – through His power for His glory.
  • Create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit Oh Lord.
