1 A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. 4 His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born. 5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days. 7 And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. 10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. 12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.” 13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the desert, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring--those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) states:
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Before reading our chapters for today, I wanted to speak briefly about God’s covenantal love for Israel. The Jewish nation was chosen by God to be his treasured possession. All the promises of the Old Testament for Israel will most assuredly one day come to pass. Not one will fail. Scripture tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:20(NIV): 20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
Remember, Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness. Because of God’s love for Israel, it should not come as a surprise to us that Israel takes up much of the space in the Book of Revelation particularly given the fact that she dominates the pages of the Old Testament as well, Amen?
Deuteronomy 7:6-10 (NIV) speaking of the Jewish nation states:
6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. 7 The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 8 But it was because the LORD loved you and kept the oath he swore to your forefathers that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. 10 But those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction; he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.
Hebrews 6:13-20 (NIV) also tells us:
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. 16 Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
God’s election of Israel was never to become a source of pride for the Jewish nation rather they were to be a light for the nations – pointing others to Him. Just as in the church we are to be pointing others to the Savior. Further, God did not find any intrinsic merit in her which would have motivated Him to choose her. In fact her small size originally would have served as a great hindrance and detriment to her election. Yet, she dominates the pages of the Old Testament because she is God’s nation of destiny. That He is not through with her, is seen in the prophetic “time of Jacob’s trouble” outlined in Revelation Chapter 13 and described in Daniel 9:24-27 which states:
24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. 25 Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing [of the temple] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”
The “seventieth week” of Daniel or the Tribulation period is covered in Revelation chapters 6 – 18. It would naturally include an extensive prediction of Israel’s part in that difficult time that will try the whole earth. Revelation Chapter 12 and 13 finds us in the middle of the last “seven”.
On the positive side, regarding the Jewish nation, Moses offered two reasons for God’s choice of Israel. First, the Lord loved Israel. Ultimately this divine love is a mystery since it was not motivated by any inherent goodness in the nation. Just as He loves us and there is no inherent goodness in us either. Jesus Himself stated in Mark 10:17-18:
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good--except God alone.”
Secondly, He chose the Jewish nation because of an oath He swore to Israel’s forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Lord had promised the patriarchs in the Old Testament that their descendants would become a mighty nation on the earth and inherit the land of Canaan, where their Savior would rule and reign. There is much prophecy in the Old Testament pointing to the Millennial reign of Jesus on this earth. We are told in Isaiah 2:12-22 (NIV):
12 The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled), 13 for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty, and all the oaks of Bashan, 14 for all the towering mountains and all the high hills, 15 for every lofty tower and every fortified wall, 16 for every trading ship and every stately vessel. 17 The arrogance of man will be brought low and the pride of men humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, 18 and the idols will totally disappear. 19 Men will flee to caves in the rocks and to holes in the ground from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth. 20 In that day men will throw away to the rodents and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold, which they made to worship. 21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks and to the overhanging crags from dread of the LORD and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth. 22 Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?
Again speaking of the millennial reign of Christ, Isaiah 11:1-9 (NIV) states:
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD-- 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. 6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. 7 The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the viper’s nest. 9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
And again in Isaiah 25:6-9 (NIV):
6 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine -- the best of meats and the finest of wines. 7 On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; 8 he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The LORD has spoken. 9 In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”
Lastly, Micah 4:1-4 (NIV) states:
1 In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. 2 Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 3 He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. 4 Every man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken.
God will always be faithful to His Word. Always. For that reason He brought Israel out... from the land of slavery – just as He has brought us out from the bondage of our sins and depravity.
In Chapter 7 of Revelation we discovered 144,000 Apostle Paul – like evangelists, going forth to preach the Gospel of Christ. This will begin during the first twenty-one months of the Tribulation. Because of the effects of the Rapture of the church in Chapter 4 – believers are now gone from the earth and are in heaven - and the world conditions of chaos designed by God to get people on earth to look up, these 144,000 may well reach more people for Christ than have been won during the entire Christian dispensation.
It should be kept in mind that the 144,000 Jewish evangelist represent a remnant of Israel that I believe will be kept safe and protected by God until the end of the Tribulation period as His effectual witnesses. God will always have a witness. According to Revelation 11 the Jews will rebuild the temple in Jerusalem in order to reinstate the sacrificial system. This indicates that they will return to their land not believing that Jesus is the ultimate Savior for their sins and that no other sacrifice for sin is necessary but His blood. It is never Jesus plus anything else that will save us. It is Christ alone. We also discovered that God will send two special witnesses – similar to Moses and Elijah to counteract in Palestine the supernatural powers of the Antichrist.
Prayer: Lord, if you do not teach us nothing worthwhile will be taught. We desperately need you Holy Spirit to open our eyes to rightly discern Your Truth—both for your glory and for our ultimate good.
